Most of us are familiar with this course since it's a stop on the Disc Golf Pro Tour. Is it an underrated stop, though? I'm here to say it is!
The first thing I feel this course has going for it is the easy access to a major airport (Cincinnati/Covingon). While it's a discussion for another time, do you agree that the DGPT should prioritize courses that are easy access to players, staff/volunteers, and spectators?
While this part of the country can get HOT, the consistent shade on the course due to its wooded nature, and the usual light breeze, made for a pleasant summer afternoon round. Also, the locals are great! There are quite a few layouts on UDisc and the locals are happy to help you navigate if needed.
Speaking of multiple layouts, I played the DPGT FPO layout since I visited just a few weeks after the Pro Tour came through, but there is a full 24 hole layout, and an additional original 18 hole layout, if you're interested. The DGPT layout is, predictably, a safari-style hybrid.
Holes 2 and 5 are absolutely gorgeous with their memorable basket placements near the pond:
The green of hole 6 is also a scenic and memorable spot. This is where you'll find the dog memorial and the brick "Idlewild" sign.
The middle of the course is an absolute blast. Holes 9 and 11 are ace runs you could easily hang out and empty your bag on. Then of course hole 13 is the famed KY hole, which was so fun I nearly did empty my bag :)
Ending holes 17 and 18 were other highlights for me. I feel TV doesn't do hole 17 justice for the scenery and those landing zones are tight!! (Yep, you can see below where I went OB!) Hole 18 is a great finishing hole, as it gives good score separation for the pros and just feels like a nice finish as you come out of the woods.
If you find yourself anywhere near this area, Idlewild is definitely worth the stop. Be ready for minor distractions from the planes overhead. ;)
Have you played Idlewild? If so let me know your thoughts below! Until next time...get out and throw!
